David Cromack
Elected as WVAS President for a two-year term in April 2019, David graduated with a Fine Art degree from the Western Australian Institute of Technology (now Curtin University) in the 1970s. He is now retired after a career in magazine journalism and book publishing and Buckingham Press, the company run by him and his wife Hilary, sponsors the prize for best abstract work in WVAS exhibitions.
“When painting, I alternate between periods of producing fairly traditional landscapes and others where the finished images are completely abstract. For the latter, I rarely have a finished image in mind, preferring to ‘build’ a picture with layers of colours and textures until I am satisfied that the balance is correct.
“For many years I have challenged myself to create visual equivalents to Brian Eno’s concept of ‘ambient music’, which puts an emphasis on tone and atmosphere over traditional musical structures or rhythms. My goal is to create an image where the viewer’s eye is continually engaged in movement because there is no focal point on which it can rest.”
